Is it suitable for the UK. i.e Legal ?
As a UK radio supplier licensed by OFCOM I frequently get calls for help from buyers of radios on ebay. I have written this guide to help you avoid buying something useless or illegal.
There are many legitimate radio bargains on ebay and I shop here myself often. However there are many sellers offering useless or illegal radios at what appear to be bargain prices (until you get your hands on them). Before you buy do your homework, there are many good UK radio websites and even more legitimate UK web traders who will advise you before you buy. Also see Wikipedia.
All radio transmitting equipment in the UK has to be build to a certain specification and often requires a licence. This is to prevent interference to other users and to protect yourself from interference..
Interference may not sound too likely until you think of all the emergency services, medical and safety radio system on the ground or in the air controlling aircraft etc. If you use a radio on the 'wrong' frequency' you will probably never be aware of the problems you are causing. Just because you don't hear anyone it doesn't mean they cant hear you. Your transmission may block a receiver somewhere from picking up vital transmissions.
To help co-ordinate the hundreds of radio channels Ofcom issues licences which specify frequency and a location where that equipment can be used. They also monitor frequencies for illegal use and hunt down and prosecute offenders.
Radio channels are co-ordinated on a worldwide basis. For historical reason a radio for use in the USA will not be built to a suitable spec for the UK and vice versa. The same applies to Asia so a radio from Hong Kong will not be suitable for the UK.
Licence Free
In the UK the only licence free hand-held radios are clearly marked on the case as PMR446. Any radios marked as such will work with any other regardless of make. Make sure your PMR 446 radio has CTCSS (Tone squelch) and you can change the channel and CTCSS setting, You will then be able to avoid listening to other users.
Licensed
There are several types of licence costing from around

Dbox1 scam more information
I had noticed that a fellow ebayer had posted that people are selling dbox1's and they are nothing like the dbox2. They are much much harder to get working on UK cable networks. The dbox1 does work on the UK networks but it doesnt autoupdate keys, it needs to have a certain type of CAM with the box which has been modified, you will also need to have a card programmer handy. That means reporgramming the card every week or two, just like the old days ;-)
The majority of dbox1's for sale are people shifting on their mistakes as they have also been fooled. 9 times out of 10 they do not come with the CAM module, which is required for watching encrypted programming. If you still are not dissuaded make sure that the CAM has been modified to use the Amon firmware (a big job). Because the dbox1 doesnt have a standard CI socket (its different) it will not work with other CAMs. The dbox1 does not run linux like the dbox2 and is not as powerful. It doesnt have ethernet either. The only two ways to connect the dbox1 to a PC is by the RS232 port (for flashing) or via the SCSI port. If you connect the box to your PC via the SCSI port you can record the streams to your HDD for conversion to DVD etc but who wants a big SCSI cable lying round their room?
To sum it up if you have a lot of time on your hands, speak fluent German and have some of the required equipment lying around give it a go.... But otherwise opt for the dbox2 and make sure you get the right one for your needs as there

MATCHING AMPLIFIERS TO SPEAKERS GUIDE
Matching Amplifers To Speakers
When you're matching a Power Amp to a PA Speaker, a good rule of thumb is to pick an amplifier that can deliver power equal to twice the speaker's continuous IEC power rating. This means that a speaker with a "nominal impedance" of 8 Ohms and a continuous IEC power rating of 350 watts will require an amplifier that can produce 700 watts into an 8 Ohm load. For a stereo pair of speakers, the amplifier should be rated at 700 watts per channel into 8 Ohms. A quality professional loudspeaker can handle transient peaks in excess of its rated power if the amplifier can deliver those peaks without distortion.Using an amp with some extra "headroom" will help assure that only clean, undistorted power gets to your speakers. Some professional amplifiers are designed so they have additional headroom. These amps can cleanly reproduce transient peaks that exceed their rated power. In this case select a model with an output power rating equal to the continuous IEC power rating of the speaker. Consult the amplifier manufacturer or owner's manual to learn more. In some applications, such as critical listening in a studio environment, it is important to maintain peak transient capability. For these applications, use an amplifier that can deliver 6db (or four times as much) more power than the continuous IEC power rating. If budget restraints or legacy equipment force you to use an amplifier with less power, extreme care should be taken to see that the amplifier is not driven into clipping. It may surprise you to learn that low power can result in damage to your speaker or system. I know many of you may have thought, been told or read that you should always have speakers twice the power of the amp, we can say this is true if you purchasing a budget system (see our other reviews regarding Rms

Buying a used video projector - buyer beware!
It has now been several years since small, portable video projectors came into the marketplace, and a number are becoming available on the second hand market. However, there are a number of pitfalls of which potential buyers need to be aware.
Firstly, prices of new projectors have dropped by around 50 - 60 % in the last 3 years, so look at new prices before buying used - you may be pleasantly surprised, and remember, you get a warranty with a new machine, now usually 3 years - you won't get this on a second-hand device. Also be aware that this is an area of technology that is changing very quickly with continuous improvements in reliability, running costs, size and noise.

THE GUIDE TO A BETTER SOUND SYSTEM
There are a few guides on eBay about Audio Equipment that are not really accurate, but never the less the main point has been clearly put accross that MAX - PEAK POWER - PMPO Speaker power ratings should be ignored (So should amplifier ratings in this manner)
The rating you need to be intrested in is the RMS value (Root Means Squared) the Max, Peak, Music Power, PMPO ratings are not illegal or missleading if you understand that they are just different ways of measuring a products ability. One guide claims that if you buy a 300W RMS speaker you can run it at 300W all the time, this is not correct. There are many factors to consider, one is that the RMS figure is claimed by each manufacture under Lab Testing, but its deeper than this as you can have 2 speakers both rated at 300W RMS but one will sustain more punishment than the other, one may distort sooner. The ratings are achieved by sending a White or Pink noise through the speaker for a set period of time, this time can vary and also so can the frequency of this. A pink or white noise sounds like a FM radio thats not tuned in, that hissing sound, this basically has a rather flat curve to it if you look at its signal, where as live or recorded playback music signals are nothing like this what so ever. The bass is the most demanding signal, and if you add bass using a bass control on a mixer or amp you are increasing this signal and the amplifier basically amplicates a what is already distorted signal as the curves are choped off as the signal is too large, this means that even at 50W RMS output your 300W RMS speaker will distort.
As you can see there is more to all the MAX, PEAK, RMS talk than one can imagine, if you buy a pair of speakers off eBay say 300W max Each yes they are probably 150W RMS, but even expensive brands would struggle to produce this constant, you have to consider many other factors, amplificaction can

"International iPods"
"International iPods"Did you know that there is no difference between iPods from different regions? Apple packs the exact same iPod to sell in every area of the world. What's the difference then? None, except that you are paying a different price than other people. There are several things that people are concerned about that I will address here:The iPod comes prepackaged with several languages to choose from. You can select:EnglishJapaneseCestinaDanskDeutschEspanolFrancaisItalianNetherlandsPortuguesPyccknnSuomiSvenskaTurkceKoreanChinese (both types)In addition, the instruction manual comes with all these languages as well. Think about this for a moment. Why would Apple include all these languages in every iPod they sold? The answer is so they can produce one iPod that can be shipped ANYWHERE with ease. Imagine having to ensure that there was adaquete supply of iPods with the French language, and not too many with English on them. That would be a nightmare.

Buying Blu-ray DVDs on eBay UK:
Anybody buying Blu-ray DVDs in the UK will know that, unless they have an all region player, Region A Blu-Ray discs will not work in their machines. I recently had a bad experience with one UK seller who listed a disc for UK buyers WITHOUT stating that the item was region A. Whilst this was bad enough, when contacted, the seller advised that I should have asked for the region before bidding!!Whilst it is hoped that eBay UK will clamp down on this and any other seller attempting to sell discs that are not compatible with UK machines without stating their region in the auction, buyers should be very aware of this problem with unscrupulous sellers.Come on eBayUK, stop this now before it developes into a greater problem for other buyers!

DVD recorder Jargon Buster
Not only are there different dvd recording formats, but each recorder also has various connection, recording, editing and playback facilities that come with their own, often mystifying, jargon and confusing compatibility issues. To untangle this mess, we explain thge main features of dvd recorders.
Rewritable DVD FormatsDVD RW is the widely available system. Discs can be reused 1,000 times and are compatible in almost all existing players. Basic editing is possible but non-linear edits(such as reorganising the order of the programmes or scenes) are not.
DVD-RW (VR mode) uses DVD-RW discs as supported by leading manufacturers. When formatted in VR mode (video recording) you can make non linear edits, but recordings aren't widely compatible. disk life is also around 1,000 rewrites.
DVD-RAM is mainly supported by Panasonic, Toshiba, JVC, and Samsung. Disks are usually come in protective cartridges and enable non-linear editing. They can be reused up to 100,000 times but recordeings are compatible in very few players.
Write-once DVD FormatsDvd R is the use-once disk for most DVD RW recorders. You can accumulate recordings on a disk until you are finished, and you can delete individual recordings but you cannot re-record. Disks must be finalised (sealing the disk contents) before playing elsewhere, but once done compatibility is very high.Dvd-R is the widely used write-once format as found in DVD-RW and DVD-RAM recorders, as well as many computers. As with DVD R, you can compile recordings gradually or remove recordings from playback without being able to claimback the space or reuse the disk. Disks must also be finalised, after which compatibility in other players is generally good.

Technical Hints about Sky Digiboxes
The Grundig GDS200/1 is one of the earlier digiboxes of its generation, its performance being comparable to that of the Amstrad DRX100/200 series. It is neither as sensitive nor as responsive as the Panasonic boxes. It seems to work best with a 60cm x 70cm dish with the signal strength at 50% and the signal quality at 75%, (signal quality is a measure of the Bit Error Correction Rate, B.E.R.), although this is likely to vary according to the transponder being received.

FAKE BUYERS - Paypal money reversal scam!!!
I have been on eBay for a good few years, the last time I used eBay was almost a year and a half ago and have a new user account, hence the low feedback rating. During this time, I have had many pleasant transactions...until just 2 weeks ago week. Thought I would share this information to sellers out there as it is becoming very common since it also happened to my friend. I sold an Ipod and was paid by paypal. As soon as this was received and I transferred the payment to my bank account I sent the Ipod off. 2 days later, I was sent an email from paypal saying that I was the receiver of unauthorised funds from the account that bought my Ipod. I then contacted the buyer to ask what was goin on and she replied that there had been some trouble with her paypal account and she would send the item back to me. The money was reversed from my account and given back to the buyer and I did not get the Ipod back. The buyer disappeared and didn't return any of my emails. I contacted paypal and they said they were not going to give me my money back as
